<image:title>About - A little bit about me</image:title>
<image:caption>I have been working in the helping field for non-profit organizations since 1995. My career has allowed me to support children, youth, LGBTQ, men, women, families, and those who have experienced violence. I have lived and worked in both urban and remote communities throughout BC. These experiences have given me the opportunity to hold positions where I supervised and supported other clinicians. I have learned that the therapeutic journey is humbling and unique, to each and every one of us. Since leaving the world of non-profits to open a private practice, I have grown even more as a counsellor. Neurobiology, cognitive process, and somatic processing support my trauma-informed lens, allowing me to help clients better understand the impact their past experiences have had in creating their current behaviours, symptoms, or struggles, and how one relates to their world and to themselves. I specialize in supporting individuals and their loved ones who struggle with grief and loss, general distress, anger, anxiety, PTSD, depression, low self-confidence, addictions, and relationship dysfunction. Licensed through BCACC EMDR-certified CVAP-registered/approved counsellor ICBC -approved counsellor FNHA- approved counsellor</image:caption>

<image:title>Purpose of Counselling - Purpose and Nature of Counselling</image:title>
<image:caption>When people engage in counselling, they are often ready for change in some aspect of their life. Counselling can lead to improved mental health by helping you better understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Counselling often helps to improve your relationships, how you relate to others (and yourself), and how you connect with the world; overall, it can help you to feel much better. Another significant purpose of counselling (after feeling better) is skill building. It is important for us to learn what skills we can grow to help us throughout our lives, to better support ourselves for the next emotional challenge. Overall, the healing and insights gained from counselling will continue after your initial investment. The number of counselling sessions you have is completely up to you! Typically, people decide on the number and frequency of sessions as we go. Depending on many personal factors, your counselling journey will be unique to you. I will work with you to help you set and achieve your goals while staying mindful of your therapeutic needs. I will help you facilitate your personal growth through the counselling process, while keeping you safe and informed.</image:caption>

<image:title>My Approach - Therapeutic Modalities or Approaches</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the years I have been afforded the opportunity to receive knowledge and skill from some of the greatest minds in the clinical and psychological fields. I have practiced and fine tuned counselling approaches that are evidence based, effective and efficient. I take a holistic and integrated therapeutic approach to ensure I honour each client’s specific needs, to best support their unique journey. Some people like to talk a lot; some people don’t like talking very much at all. Some people find most of their emotional pain is in their body. Some people resonate with mindfulness and visualization. Not any one approach will fit us all. The common approaches with the most scientific evidence of effectiveness and efficiency are CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). I overlap aspects of CBT with EMDR throughout therapy. I may also use techniques that branch from CBT such as Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and DBT. I’m excited that my years of experience and training have helped me to really see what works to bring about changes for clients. Trauma can be experienced in many forms: experiencing violence, verbal abuse, or neglect; not getting what you need for your growing brain at a certain time in your life; or experiencing ruptures in your attachments. EMDR and CBT are shown to help decrease symptoms resulting from these wounds – typically a low sense of self, anxiety, anger, depression, and PTSD.</image:caption>

<image:title>Risks and Benefits - Benefits & Risks</image:title>
<image:caption>Counselling presents both benefits and risks. The benefits include, but are not limited to, better relationships, solutions to specific problems, an increased sense of well-being, and a reduction of distressing symptoms. Because counselling tends to bring up uncomfortable feelings and difficult memories, people sometimes feel worse before they begin to feel better. My job is to help you through the more difficult times. I am here for you! Another possible risk is that, as you experiment with new, healthier ways of thinking and behaving, relationships with others may be altered or disrupted. Other people in your life may need to catch up with your new sense of wellbeing! You are encouraged to share any feelings of fear, concern, or doubt about the counselling process with me at any time during your sessions.</image:caption>
